profound sorrow at the passing of Marcello Mastroianni. However if our beloved Marcello had any say in the matter, he would undoubtedly grace us with those incredibly expressive eyes, shake his head in the patented, ironic manner and say: "friends, Thank you! Butget on with life - the only one given to us. have a drink and yes, damn the doctors and the conventional wisdom, and have a smoke, and GET ON WITH LIFE! As an American "Italophile" obessesd with Italian culture of every conceiveable type, I have especially loved Italian cinema. Naturally, a love for Marcello's intensity and unique screen style has been a part of this. I guess his death, along with Fellini's, in someway symbolizes a closing in a period of history where fantasy and sensuality were tantamount to the viewing experience. Where the unexpected became the expected. All I can say is that Marcello and Federico to me embody people who lived up to their true artistic potential and remained always true to their personal vision. Reading Fellini's autobiography by Charlotte Chandler I am in awe of his ability to remain true to his primary passion, making films, without regard for fame or fortune. |
